On a secluded property surrounded by forest, this homey mountain lodge in a building dating from 1939 is a 5-minute walk from the Essex Amtrak station and a mile from the Scalplock Mountain Fire Lookout.
Rustic rooms have mountain decor; some add sitting areas. Refurbished train cabooses with kitchenettes, decks and mountain views are offered. Cabins and upgraded railcar rooms feature full kitchens. There are no TVs.
Parking is free, as is Wi-Fi in the bar and lobby. A casual restaurant is set in a dining car. Activities include cross-country skiing, whitewater rafting and Glacier National Park tours (fee). There is no cell phone service.
