Belo Horizonte is one of the four biggest cities in Brazil, and it is the capital of the state Minas Gerais. This name in Portuguese means "beautiful horizon" and it is also called "Beaga", Portuguese for "BH". The name says everything: Belo Horizonte offers view on surrounding mountains that will take your breath away and city itself is built on several hills. It is designed as planned city approximately one century ago and its streets adorned with alleys make perfect net. But meanwhile, the city was so populated and previous urbanistic plan was surpassed. Belo Horizonte has about 2 million inhabitants and it is the center of very intense economical and cultural activity with magnificent infrastructure both on national and international level. Some people say that Belo Horizonte is tropical version of New York City. One of the interesting characteristics of Beaga is disproportionate relation between men and women. During 1990's, there were 175,000 more women than men living in the city. No one knows the reason, but it is assumed that men go away in searching for job, while women remain in Beaga.

Interesting fact is also that Google maintains its headquarters here. Even though BH is not so big tourist attraction such are Rio de Janeiro or other cities in Brazil, its economy is very developed. Maybe there won't be so much tourist groups around you, but that is exactly an opportunity to explore beautiful Belo Horizonte at your own pace and you will enjoy in a lot of pubs, restaurants, music and dance that BH offers. Here are some interesting sites you should visit during your stay in Beaga: Pampulha is district located 8 kilometers from center of BH, and it is famous for its modern Brazilian architecture. You can also visit Sao Francisco de Assis Church, the Parque Guanabara, the small amusement park.

There is also situated worlds famous late Tennis Clube and Pampulha Architectural Complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer which is located near artificial lake Pampulha. Alta Vila Tower offers magnificent view of surrounding mountains and Beaga. On the main floor you can find Hard Rock Cafe. belo horizonteParque Municipal is gorgeous green area right in the middle of the city. It is based on French parks, and there are small lagoons where you can rent a boat, or you can feed little ducks. Inside the park there are the Casa Maluca, the Casa dos Pneus and small amusement park where children would indubitably enjoy. Museum Arts and Crafts is located in building where previously the Central Train Station was located. There you can see popular works and professions of the Brazil before its industrialization. Museu de Ciencias Naturais will attract you with collection of various whales, mollusks and Brazilian forest animals. Museu Historico Abilio Barreto is dedicated to the history of Beaga. Praca da Liberdade is beautiful square lined with palm trees. Everywhere you look, you will notice old buildings from the 19th Century, including the Historic seat of the State Government. Belo Horizonte is also birthplace of trash metal band Sepultura that already has success in the United States. It is also one of the oldest urban railway systems in entire Brazil.
