Dayton is located just north of Cincinnati and situated within the Miami Valley region. Major Attractions The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force has to be on the top of anyone's list. It is not only the oldest, but also the largest military aviation museum in the world. It collects, preserves and presents to the public the rich history of the United States Air Force with engaging and educational exhibits. The best part is admission is free! Carillon Historical Park sits on a beautiful campus of 65 acres that takes visitors through the regions history over the last 200 years. Some of the exhibits include the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, Newcom's Tavern which is the city's oldest building dating back to 1796, and the B&O steam locomotive from 1835.
The National Aviation Hall of Fame is just as its name suggests: to honor the men and women who served their country and created innovations that harnessed the technology of flight. There is also a learning and research center. Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park commemorates the work of Wilbur and Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar. There are five National Historic Landmarks located within the park. Some landmarks and exhibits that can be found within the park include: the Wright Cycle Company building, the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, and Hawthorn Hill. Shopping PNC 2nd Street Market is well known for its farm-fresh foods. It is a vibrant family atmosphere and open year round. The holiday season in particular is a fun time to visit and buy handmade gifts from local artisans. The Dayton Mall is good place to shop for national retail shops.
Antiques Village in Washington Park Plaza is a large, unique, and affordable place to shop for gifts, framed art, used books, collectables, jewelry and many rustic and vintage items. Dorothy Lane Market is a grocery store that specializes in stocking hard to find and gourmet kitchen items. It also has a bakery that is considered "sinfully delicious". Arts and Entertainment The Dayton Visual Arts Center is one of the area's leading contemporary art spaces. It provides gallery talks, innovative exhibits with advertised exhibit openings, and many professional development workshops. There is also an annual art auction, which is the biggest in Ohio, and connects the artists with the public by providing affordable pieces for purchase.
The Dayton Art Institute has been around almost 100 years and is a very meaningful experience for anyone who visits. Its collections include many permanent exhibits and world class traveling exhibitions as well as concerts, art classes, and family programs. The Victoria Theatre in downtown Dayton hosts live performances in an historic theatre. From magicians, to stand-up comedians, to theatrical performances, film series, and ballet, it is a great place to take in a show. The Schuster Center is a performing arts center and provides the best local and international performing artists. It is also home to the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera, and Ballet, and hosts traveling Broadway performances. Olive, An Urban Dive is a small restaurant that only seats 28, so one must call in advance for reservations. It serves an "urban" menu of Mediterranean delights and boasts about its farm to table foods and ingredients which puts it a cut above the rest. Dewey's Pizza is a small pizza chain that local's rave about. It is not just the unique pizza combinations, but the artisan fresh salads that make it so good. Pizza is very popular in Dayton and other favorites include Cassano's, Marion's, and Flying Pizza. Fusian serves excellent sushi rolls in a great feeling dining culture. Roost Modern Italian is fine dining at its best. It goes beyond traditional Italian and uses fresh seasonal ingredients. It is a very popular place and reservations should be made in advance. Dayton is a spectacular city to visit, especially for the history buff or the creative artist. Even if history and/or art is not on the top of one's list of attractions, the city has many options for family fun and entertainment. |
