The Javanese city of Yogyakarta is a place in which many cultures have mixed over the years, including Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and travellers from Europe. All have left their mark, contributing to the tapestry of the city. As Yogyakarta is so rich in history, it contains many fascinating historical sites. Ratu Boko Palace is believed to date from the eighth century AD, although its actual history is obscure and steeped in local legend. It is named after the folkloric king Prabu Boko, and the remains of the palace contain references to Hinduism and Buddhism. Atop Imogiri Hill lies the Mataram Kingdom's royal graveyard, which was commissioned by Sultan Agung in 1632; today the Sultan is probably the most famous resident of the graveyard. Any visitor to the site must follow a strict dress code, so it is worth doing some research and coming prepared if you choose to see this unique site first hand. More up-to-date destinations in Yogyakarta include Jalan Malioboro, a street noted for its vast array of shops which make it a popular area with tourists. Visitors with children may wish to visit the Kids Fun Park, which contains a range of rides and other amusements. And finally, for a place in which past and present overlap, there is the Ullen Sentalu museum.
